China: Navigating new and old paths to trade development

Following the international financial crisis of 2008, while many countries reported recessions, business closures, and family crises, China maintained an annual economic growth rate between 8-11%. This period marked a dynamic moment for the Chinese economy. Even today, post-pandemic, China remains one of the fastest-growing countries in the world.

According to official Chinese data, “between 2013 and 2022, China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by over 200%, rising from 59.3 trillion yuan to 121 trillion yuan. This corresponds to an average annual growth rate of 6%. Today, its economy has reached 18 trillion US dollars, ranking as the second-largest economy in the world.”

With its policy of openness, Chinese companies of international scale, such as Alibaba and Tik-Tok, are not only creating economic growth but also spreading elements of Chinese culture and tradition globally. Through sayings, memes, reels, or videos made by influencers, Chinese concepts are gaining international recognition.

China’s investment in technology, through factories focused on tech products, has further boosted trade initially established in the production of clothing, household appliances, and more. However, in its development strategy, the world’s second-largest economy aims to combine its current productive potential with the strengthening of both new and old trade channels. If its internal infrastructure and international maritime connections make it the main trading partner for 140 countries worldwide (according to official Chinese data), China tself is working to revive ancient trade routes such as the Silk Road.

For this reason, Zhejiang Normal University hosted a two-week seminar for journalists from BRI countries. The seminar was a blend of university lectures and numerous visits to important trade and cultural units. Through this combination, 33 journalists from 13 countries had the opportunity to closely observe development rhythms in agriculture, tourism, the automotive industry, trade, media, cinema, and archaeology.
